A practical format guide

HEIC vs HEIF

HEIF names the container format; HEIC is a common file extension used for HEIF images encoded with HEVC. Both can encounter the same compatibility problems.

Photo conversion stays on your device. Speed and batch capacity depend on the files, browser and available memory.

Privacy First

All decoding runs in your browser with no uploads, no account, and no cloud queue.

Smart Queue

At most three files are processed at once. Large images can still exceed your browser's available memory.

Built for Compatibility

Export to JPG, PNG, WebP, or combine scans into one multi-page PDF.

Choose an output based on the destination, not the source extension

Whether a file ends in .heic or .heif, the receiving app determines which replacement format is appropriate. JPG is the usual compatibility choice; PNG, WebP, and PDF serve different workflows.

  • Do not fix compatibility by changing .heic to .jpg in the filename.
  • Use JPG for general sharing, PNG for editing, WebP for web delivery, and PDF for grouped documents.
  • Keep the source container when you may need Apple-specific image data later.

Why the names are often used interchangeably

HEIF stands for High Efficiency Image File Format and describes a container capable of holding images and related data. HEIC is widely used as the extension for HEIF content encoded with High Efficiency Video Coding.

For everyday troubleshooting, the important question is not which acronym appears in the filename. It is whether the destination can decode the file and which output it accepts.

Renaming is not conversion

A file extension is a label. Renaming photo.heic to photo.jpg leaves the original encoded data unchanged, so software expecting JPEG data can still reject it. A real conversion decodes the source pixels and writes a new file in the selected format.

Check the output, not just the download

Each completed preview now reports dimensions, input/output bytes and measured conversion time. Download the local conversion report to compare files without sending the report to this site. PDF timing covers image preparation, not final document assembly. Use the conversion verification checklist for metadata, quality and browser limitations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this HEIC conversion private?
Yes. Conversion happens on your device inside your browser. Your images are not uploaded to a server as part of the conversion process.
Do you store my photos or keep a copy?
No. The app reads your selected files, generates converted downloads, and shows previews using temporary browser URLs. When you refresh or clear the queue, those previews are released.
Can I combine multiple HEIC photos into one PDF?
Yes. Choose PDF as the output format, add your images, then click Download Multi-Page PDF once they are ready.
Will converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?
JPG uses lossy compression. For most everyday photos it looks great, but if you need maximum fidelity choose PNG (larger files) or keep the original HEIC as your archive.
Why did a file fail to convert?
Some files are corrupted, partially downloaded, or use features certain decoders do not support. Try again with a single file, export the original photo again from your device, or convert to a different output format.

Tips to Avoid HEIC Issues (iPhone & Windows)

If you want to stop creating HEIC files going forward, iPhone has a camera setting for that. Open Settings > Camera > Formats, then select Most Compatible to save new photos as JPG. If you already have a library of HEIC images, converting them to JPG or PNG is the fastest way to make them usable in older desktop apps, email attachments, and upload forms.
